Bridget Jones's Diary - Helen Fielding

In the course of the year recorded in Bridget Jones's Diary, Bridget confides her hopes, her dreams, and her monstrously fluctuating poundage, not to mention her consumption of 5277 cigarettes and "Fat units 3457 (approx.) (hideous in every way)." In 365 days, she gains 74 pounds. On the other hand, she loses 72! There is also the unspoken New Year's resolution--the quest for the right man. Alas, here Bridget goes severely off course when she has an affair with her charming cad of a boss. But who would be without their e-mail flirtation focused on a short black skirt? The boss even contends that it is so short as to be nonexistent.

I've never been interested in Bridget Jones, even though the whole francise does seem to play a large role in modern feminist society. However when I found this novel for 50p in a charity shop I decided it was time to give it a go. Only a few pages in and I realised that I had been missing something fantastic. Luckily I've managed to sky+ the films which I can watch after each book.
The book itself is quite comical...I love how she weighs herself. counts calories, alcohol intake and cigarettes everyday amongst various other things. As she is quite a down to earth character it is extremely easy to empathise with her and in turn this led me to hoping for the best for her. I was extremely shocked when it turned out that Daniel was getting married but I was pleasently surprised by her Christmas day with Mark Darcy...as I definitely wasn't expecting anything to happen.
A fantastic chick lit novel with a hint of comedy - especially from Bridget's drunk diary extracts (which I find amusing to work out what it's supposed to say). I'm excited to read the next one and watch the films....I think I have found a new found love and it is one to recommend to all women (and men too if you like this sort of thing). it is pretty much a modern day classic so it's something that isn't to be missed out on.

- Received another university offer today..this time from Liverpool John Moores where I need 260 UCAS points to get in. This is a good place for me to go to as it's not far from home and I already pretty much have the grades (if my media coursework gets resubmitted). However I am still very much in love with Kingston so I shall have to have a good look around each university before making my final decision.
- I'm hoping to finish reading Bridget Jones's Diary tonight so I can watch the film on my day off tomorrow. I'm quite shocked I've never seen the film as judging by the book so far it is definitely my sort of thing.
- I also have more of Sex and the City to watch, I'm just over halfway through the first season so I'm hopefully going to finish this season tonight too.
- It's pretty bad that my life is revolving around books and TV when I should really be spending all my time revising for the upcoming exams. I've done a bit whilst I've been at sixth form the past couple of days and I'm not feeling too hopeful as I don't know a right lot.
- My ASOS order arrived today and out of 8 items I'm keeping: a cardigan, a pair of jeans and two dresses...although I'm not entirely sure about one of the dresses and whether I'd wear it.

- My first day back at sixth form was awful, after 3 weeks of getting up when I want and doing what I want it was very difficult to wake up at 6.30 leading to me snoozing my alarm for a while. It wasn't a pretty site when I looked in the mirror to see a deathly pale face staring back at me....which meant extra time doing my makeup.
- Due to my early start I have felt drained and exhausted all day, even leading to me falling asleep whilst watching TV. However, as soon as I have come to bed the tiredness has passed. I have been laid here for two hours trying to get to sleep which has led to me watching numerous episodes of Sex and the City, from my new boxset which arrived yesterday.....and I am still awake!
- I was very proud today when I got my mock psychology exam paper back as I got a C, which was with barely any revision so I'm feeling a lot more confident now. it's a shame that's for the exam in 3 weeks time let alone the one that is in a weeks time...the one I've taken 4 times already. I just hope I do well enough to get into university.
- placed a rather large order on ASOS yesterday, which should be arriving tomorrow. Although I bought quite a lot, the average price was around £9 an item which is fantastic value as I got a lot of jeans, cardigans and dresses which would normally cost a lot. You have to love the January sales!
- I luckily only have a 2 hour day tomorrow which means I can come home and maybe do some tidying before I go round to a friends for a cuppa before some of them leave for university. I've been dreading this time coming as it has been so good having them all back but I knew it had to come. Hopefully I'll be able to go visit some of them in the next couple of months.
- I've just realised that nothing has been mentioned about our cottage trip since I suggested a place which is quite annoying. this always seems to happen when planning something good.I just hope it gets sorted as I have nothing to look forward to at the moment!

- I've had a rather productive day so far, although not on the revision front like I planned. Managed to drag myself out of bed early so I had a full day ahead. Cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom which took a while due to my brother leaving it a bombsite. Emptied the dishwasher too which is one of my pet hates for some unknown reason. I also reactivated my Lovefilm account so that we can rent Kinect games to try out before paying nearly £40 for them. So far on my rental list I have Kinect Sports, Your Shape Fitness Evolved, Kinect Motion Sports and Kinectimals. I really hope they send the first two on the list as then me and my brother each have one we want. I can only imagine his face if it was Kinectimals that came. I really want to try the fitness one as if it's good I'll start a fitness routine with it and use it everyday to become healthier. It's a much cheaper alternative to the gym and it's from the comfort of your own home (I think I'd feel self conscious going to a gym). I did try Wii Fit but I found that it was quite boring as all it seemed to be was balancing and yoga which isn't  really going to burn as many calories as this Kinect one.
- It's been a good day as my Sex & the City boxset has arrived - I have to admit I should have probably left it until after my exams to buy it as I know I'll be sat watching that instead of doing revision...that's what I did with the Gossip Girl boxsets during my last exams. At least I will never be bored and I think if I watch it in bed at a reasonable time it might actually help me to sleep...wishful thinking.
- Back to sixth form tomorrow which I'm not looking forward to at all...as it means it's only a week till my first exam and I'm in no way prepared for it. I'm planning a weeks worth of cramming which should mean I'll be okay, afterall I've been learning for this exam for nearly 3 years now which is quite depressing.
- I'm still rather confused about why I wake up everyday with a banging headache...which I think is to blame for me staying in bed so late everyday, as I know when I get up I'll be in pain. I'm hoping it's just a phase and it'll stop soon as I think I'm becoming dependent on Nurofen...and even more depressingly I've nearly run out of them!
- I really fancy having a cup of coffee with a drop of Bailey's in it (if we still have some left)...I think it gives the coffee a great taste and helps to sweeten it and make it creamier. Last time I made it I put a bit too much Bailey's in which didn't taste good but I'm hoping this time I'll make it perfectly.

- I'm finding it difficult to remember to put 2011 instead of 2010...I'll probably get the hang of it by June. The first couple of days of this year have been great but I know they'll probably go downhill when people return to university. On the plus side that means I won't have many distractions from revision so I might actually get some done...which would be good seeing as my first exam is next Wednesday..and I have to do well in this one as I have sat it 3 times already and not come out with anything better than an E.
- There was a really nice dress in the ASOS sale that I wanted but I left it too late and now it is sold out which is very annoying. I've seen some other stuff that I'm thinking it's probably best to order it now before it's too late. I still really want some slippers but all the ones I have seen are not the sort I want which is frustrating. I'm having a look on the Debenhams website for some cheap perfume as I don't want to use my Viva La Juicy all the time as it will run out quickly. Today's probably the best time to get my internet shopping out of the way otherwise the prices will rise due to the VAT inflation thing. Not sure if I'll find any that I know I like but it's worth a try.
- Really want the next 9 months to fly so I can get to university, I don't think I can cope living in this house any longer. There's far too much conflict and I always seem to be the one getting it in the neck for things that aren't anything to do with me. My brother is the one who causes numerous problems yet he gets nothing said to him as his girlfriend is glued to his side, and I've had enough. What have I done wrong? I sit doing revision but that apparently isn't an excuse not to do housework. Sorry that I actually want to get somewhere in life and get away from here.
- Everyday I wake up with a banging headache due to my lack of sleep. Everyone seems to enjoy using the telephone at ridiculous times on a morning. May I point out that the phone is directly below my bed and none of them talk quietly. It's either that or lets stand outside Becki's door and talk as loudly as we can. Over the past couple of weeks I've probably had on average 5-6 hours sleep a night which is clearly not good for me or I wouldn't be feeling ill all the time. I don't think the next 9 months could go fast enough. Once I'm out I'm never coming back.

Shopaholic & Baby - Sophie Kinsella

Becky Brandon is back - with a bump!
Becky's life is blooming. She's working at London's newest fashion store, The Look, house-hunting with husband Luke (her secret wish is a Shoe Room) ... and she's pregnant! She couldn't be more overjoyed - especially since discovering that shopping cures morning sickness. Everything has got to be perfect for her baby: from the designer nursery...to the latest, coolest pram...to the celebrity, must-have obstetrician.
But when the celebrity obstetrician turns out to be her husband Luke's glamorous, intellectual ex-girlfriend, Becky's perfect world starts to crumble.
She's shopping for two but are there three in her marriage?

As soon as I bought this book I knew I had to read it so I cast aside the book I was reading to make way for the next instalment from Kinsella and I have to say it did not disappoint. For some reason Becky is one of those characters that is easy for you to relate and empathise with. Her loveable nature often gets her in a lot of problems yet she always manages to dig her way out. As well as being a very amusing novel I have to admit that at some points I was nearly in tears because I have grown so fond of Becky. The part where Venetia tells Becky that her and Luke are having an affair made me feel so sorry for Becky and hope that it wasn't true.
Although the book is called Shopaholic and Baby, the majority of the novel is about Becky's pregnancy which I find to be fascinating as she's the sort of character who always tells it how it is. I love how even though she's pregnant she still manages to be a reckless spender.
The end of the story helps us to see Becky in a different light, living at home with her parents after having her baby (Minnie) she is quite far from the fashionista we have grown to love with her battered pram. It is especially amusing when she goes into the shop and informed that she is known as "The Girl with the Crappy Pram" which is a far cry from her usual title of "The Girl in the Green Scarf".
I really cannot wait for "Mini Shopaholic" to arrive as I'm sure Becky will be getting herself into a lot more problems when she has a child in tow and I'm interested to see if Minnie is similar to Becky in the shopping department.
This is one series I never want  to end, no matter how busy I am I seem to be able to finish each novel in a matter of hours as they are impossible to put down. This showcases just how fantastic a writer Kinsella is and once I'm finished with this series I am definitely going to have to try some of her other books out.

2 January 2011

01/01/2011

- My first post of 2011 so I had better make it a good one. Last night was excellent, went to the pub with friend's and then to one of their family's house parties which sounds a bit boring but it was good fun. I'm glad it wasn't a really wild new year and was more relaxed as I hate to imagine how much I would have suffered today. Apart from laying in bed until 3pm and having a slight headache I felt pretty fresh which was good considering I was mixing my drinks last night, which usually doesn't end well.
- I'm not one for resolutions but I feel that I need to buck up my ideas. Starting with revision as my exams are starting in just over a week and I'm so unprepared its unreal. My drive to get into university is growing along with the need to do well in exams which means only one thing - I have to work my arse off. I'm lucky that I only have one subject to do, as I have struggled the past two years when I had 3 sets of exams to revise for. Tomorrow I'm going to prepare revision and then my last two days off (Monday and Tuesday) before returning to sixth form will be solid revision. I've got into the swing of not doing work and just doing things as they come along so I'm hoping that returning to sixth form will sort this problem out and get me back into a routine where I make time for work.
- One of my other resolutions is to be healthier. I've been neglecting healthy food over the festive period and I've noticed that I've just felt so tired and grumpy which I think may be due to me not eating healthier. I'm also going to start an exercise regime once I buy an exercise game for the Kinect, as the exercise DVDs I bought last year don't really encourage me to work out as they are rather boring.
- Tomorrow evening I am going to my friend's house as she is cooking tea. This sounds very grown up compared to what we usually do but I am hoping we will end up at the pub afterwards so we can attempt to win the pub quiz again..plus I'm fancying some of the cocktails they sell. This is going to be my last bit of serious fun until the end of the exams as I really do need to sort myself out and become serious about what I'm doing.
- I also think that I should resolve to become a tidier person...my bedroom is unbelievably untidy. I can't see the floor at the moment for clothes...and then I wonder why my wardrobe is empty. I think my brain lacks the organisation part as it definitely isn't my strong point.
- I'm off to bed now with Bridget Jones's Diary (the book) which I aim to read very quickly so I can watch the film tomorrow...although if I don't it can be a treat for myself when I do revision. Night guys and happy new year!
