Based on the controversial Nick McDonell novel, TWELVE follows high school dropout turned successful drug dealer White Mike (Chace Crawford) in New York's Upper East Side. Business is booming when all of the kids are home from boarding school and everyone has money to blow. Mike leads a double life, concealing the truth from his childhood friend Molly (Emma Roberts) while his supplier Lionel (Curtis Jackson) pulls Mike further into the world of the Manhattan drug trade. Mike’s two lives begin to collide when his cousin is brutally murdered by Lionel (unknown to White Mike) and a new drug, twelve, emerges as the recreational drug of choice.
I have to be honest, I only watched this film as it starred Chace Crawford (Nate from Gossip Girl) and I was intrigued as to whether he could pull of this role. As Chace is used to playing a character from the Upper East Side, being on the otherside of this society, and dealing drugs to the rich kids must have been quite difficult to portray.
The film was excellent, I'm not normally into stuff like this but I became hooked from the beginning, desperate to know when it is all going to come out.
One of the female Upper East Sider's becomes hooked on twelve, and when she is unable to pay for her next fix she offers her virginity to Lionel. During which, White Mike bursts in and is confronted by Lionel holding a gun at the door. A gun which he saw in his cousin's possession before he was murdered. This is when it all kicks off. Several shots are fired, from Lionel and from another character (Claude), many people are injured and the shooting doesn't stop even when the police turn up. During all this commotion Molly finally learns that Mike is a drug dealer - much to her surprise.
Overall an extremely good film, which shows that Crawford has amazing acting abilities. Although twelve is the title of the film, I don't feel it played that big a part in the film itself to warrant it being the title.
